Sam Worthington Promises AVATAR 2 Will "Be Like Nothing You've Ever Seen"
It's been a little more than seven years since James Cameron blew everyone's minds with Avatar back in 2009, and since then his sequels have been delayed more times than I can count as he and his writers have cranked out the screenplays and made sure technology has caught up to his ambitious plans. But despite the delays, we will eventually see Avatar 2, and when we do, star Sam Worthington thinks it'll be worth the wait.
Speaking with We Got This Covered, Worthington said:
“They’re going to be shooting concurrently. The plan is to have some time in between, I think, but these things are always ambiguous until they start. We’re still set to start in the summer, though. James needed time to perfect the scripts. Whenever he says jump I go because he’s the man. I’ve read all the scripts, they’re great. This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he’s got a family now.
This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.”
It sounds as if Jake Sully will be used to the area of Pandora that he's been living in, but considering that the new adventures will be shot using underwater motion capture technology, it sounds like the Sully family (which presumably includes Zoe Saldana's Neytiri) will be heading under the sea to discover a new side of the planet that Jake and the audience haven't seen before. It'll be interesting to see how Cameron balances the idea of Jake having been on that world for nearly a decade with that childlike sense of discovery that permeated the first movie.
