Sebastian Stan Discusses Winter Soldier’s Past in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

As we’ve seen in the trailer, Bucky Barnes/The Winter Solider plays a big role in the Captain America: Civil War storyline. In fact, it looks like he’s one of the main reasons that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are at odds and looking to fight each other. Why is Stark so hell-bent on getting his hands on Bucky?

In a recent interview with Sebastian Stan he talks about his character and says that we’ll learn more about his history. Stan explains:

"Where we find him after Winter Soldier, he's in a place where he is learning about himself. And he's discovering  -- as you saw in the last scene of The Winter Soldier, at the museum -- he's starting to put the pieces together, starting to learn about the past. Where he's been. What he's done. And as you'll see in the next movie, it doesn't come without a huge price: emotionally, mentally and uh... Yeah, it's not easy for him learn about what he's done."

Winter Solider has killed an awful lot of people over the years while he was under the control of Hydra. He touches on that, saying:

“You have to remember it is the same Hydra, in a sense, that is responsible for him still being alive. And what happened before the movie Winter Soldier – and there will be a lot of things sort of made more clear in Civil War about what happened with him – kind of set up this relationship that he may always have with Hydra, one way or another. Because in a way they are like his second family. If that makes sense.”

I have a theory that The Winter Solider may be responsible for Howard Stark’s death, which is why Tony is willing to fight Captain America and his team to bring him to justice. There are other story details that can connect to that, which you can read here. I just don't want to throw it out there and spoil what those details are. Stan obviously won’t give any crazy details, but he does say this:

"Without giving anything away, all I can say is that he's a problem for a lot of people."

It’s going to be a fun experience watching all of the details of Winter Solider’s past unfold in this movie. I’m especially curious to see how it all concludes. You can watch Stan talk about all of this in the video interview below from marvelite. Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016.
