Perhaps some of the older crowd knew this, but it wasn't until I saw it on Reddit this morning that I learned Airplane! was a remake! The whole film is a comedic remake of a film made in 1957 by the name of Zero Hour. Dailymotion user Derek made a comparison between the two movies.
