Sony Denies Rumor That Spider-Man Will Appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Yesterday, a rumor spread claiming that Sony Pictures had made a deal with Marvel Studios for the character of Spider-Man to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. It came from solid sources from the folks at Latino Review, but now Sony has officially gone on the record to deny the claim. Sony reps told the people at CBR that it was an "old rumor" with "no validity whatsoever."

At this point, it basically comes down to which side you want to believe. If Spidey's appearance in Infinity War is supposed to be a surprise - or, more likely, if an agreement was made between the two companies, but the legal paperwork hasn't been signed yet - do you really think Sony is going to come out and confirm something like that at this point, years in advance? There's also the chance that the Sony spokesperson wasn't aware of Latino Review's new report; after all, it wasn't an "old rumor," as they state in their response, it was a brand new rumor that just sprang up yesterday.

There's still a lot of time in between now and Infinity War Part 1, so there's a good chance that this situation will be in flux for a while. Don't be surprised if you hear conflicting stories about this over the next couple of years. The bigger question is: does Marvel Studios actually need Spider-Man in the MCU at all? If the character isn't going to appear in the film adaptation of Civil War - a comic storyline in which he plays a huge role - does it make sense to just throw him in the mix right as things are getting crazy when the Infinity War story starts ramping up? It seems like if they were able to bring Spidey into the fold, Marvel may benefit from using him after Infinity War Part 2, when the table is completely reset by the events in those mega-movies and the future of the MCU is once again uncertain.

What do you think?
