STAR FOX ZERO Hands On Impressions - E3 2015

Star Fox Zero was just announced for the Wii U, and it looks amazing! Finally, another Miyamoto Starfox. No more awful "adventures" or agonizing "assaults." This one is all Arwing, just like the first Super Nintendo version and the version released on Nintendo 64.

I was very excited to dust off my mental flight suit and play as Fox McCloud while soaring through the beautiful skies of Corneria. All while shooting down what look like the forces of the space chimp Andross.

As I was in line to play I noticed that a lot of people weren't doing as well as I thought they would. This is Star Fox we're playing here... It's not that hard of a game to play. We grew up with this game! But sure enough, when it was my turn to play I immediately found out why some were falling short when it came to blowing baddies apart.

The game is completely reliant on the gamepad gyro controls for aiming and precise shooting. Because of this, the right analog stick is all of your auxiliary flight controls, up for boost, down for break, left and right to bank and do barrel rolls. It was awkward and took some getting used to, but once I did, the game was incredible. Using both sticks for flying while looking around for things to shoot felt like I was actually flying an Arwing. However, focusing so much on the first person small screen of the gamepad left me feeling like I was missing a lot of things I want to see in the world of Star Fox.

I can't wait for the end of the year for this game to come out. It looks beautiful, it sounds awesome, and it has really good classic game feel. The controls take some getting used to, but they feel really good once you do. Star Fox Zero will definitely be on my Christmas list this year.
