STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Officially Starts Shooting and HAN SOLO Film Release Date Confirmed
During a recent quarterly earnings call for Disney, CEO Bob Iger offered a couple of big updates for Star Wars: Episode VIII and the Han Solo standalone film project. During the call, he revealed that Rian Johnson's Episode VIII has official started principal photography. He went on to say that Disney had an amazing fourth quarter in 2015 thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie has made over $2 billion at the box office and has made over $3 billion in consumer products. That money is just going to keep rolling as Disney and Lucasfilm continue to make Star Wars movies. Iger said:
"There is no better way to propel this franchise into the future than producing quality products. Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has just commenced and will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun."
Disney's CEO went on to talk about the Han Solo film project being developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They still have yet to give the movie an official title, but he confirmed that the movie will be released in theaters in May of 2018 and that the film is in pre-production. As you know, Lucasfilm went on a massive search to cast a young actor in the role of Solo, and the last we heard, they narrowed it down to a few individuals that include Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, Brooklyn’s Emory Cohen, and Blake Jenner.
Iger gave a brief update about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, saying that they "absolutely love what [they've] seen so far." So Gareth Edwards seems to be delivering the goods! I can't wait to see for myself what exactly he's been doing.
So, we've got Rogue One coming December 16th, 2016, Episode VIII coming on December 15th, 2017, Han Solo coming May of 2018, and Episode IX coming in May of 2019.
