Stephen Chow's THE MERMAID Has Made $431 Million in China and We Can't See It

It's not often that a highly successful film doesn't find it's way to the United States (if it didn't originate there), but when it does we take notice. GQ says Stephen Chow's bonkers tale The Mermaid pulled in $431 million in the single country it played in! Even as big as China is, that's insane. What's even more insane is the trailer, take a look.

So why can't we see it, especially when there's an English subbed trailer?! Sony is limiting release in the U.S. after letting it open in 35 theaters nationwide. When those 35 theaters only generated $1 million in profits they bumped it down to 2 theaters for this weekend. Absolutely insane considering the success this film has had overseas, but I'm not too worried.

I guarantee we'll see this one on Netflix soon enough. I still don't know if it's serious or a joke, though!
