It really is looking like a Goonies sequel is going to happen! I thought it was interesting that back in 2012 actor Sean Astin said he was 1000% sure that a Goonies sequel would happen, then a couple weeks ago director Richard Donner said he was also 1000% certain it was going to happen as well. I don't know what it is about the 1000%, but they make it seems like it's a done deal. Now today we've learned from Donner that Steven Spielberg wrote the story for the sequel! TMZ caught up with the director, asked him about the film, and this was his reply:
“Hopefully we’re going to get this done, period. Spielberg came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don’t do it without him, and he came up with another storyline and he’s right on.”
The fact that Spielberg came up with the story, and is still involved is incredibly exciting for a long time fan like myself. I know a lot of Goonies fans are worried and don't like the idea of a sequel. But I can't help but be giddy about it. I love the idea of getting the gang back together after all this time. I want to see how these characters turned out 30 years later.
There are still no details on what the story is, but I'm sure Spielberg came up with something awesome, otherwise I don't think he'd do it. The last script that was written for the sequel involved a new group of kids who would be the sons and daughters of the original characters. They would go off on an adventure of their own. I hope that isn't the case with the new story Spielberg came up with, I'd like to see the movie focus on those characters again.
Everyone involved with the original film has expressed interest in reprising their roles, so let's see what happens!
