STONEHEARST ASYLUM Trailer - Psychological Thriller with an All-Star Cast
Here’s the first trailer for the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired psychological thriller Stonehearst Asylum, which was previously titled Eliza Graves. As FirstShowing points out, this looks discouragingly similar to Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Both are period dramas set at an insane asylum where all isn’t as it appears, and both star Ben Kingsley in seemingly similar roles. In Stonehearst Asylum, Jim Sturgess stars as a Harvard Medical School graduate who takes a job at a mental institution, unaware the it has been taken over by its patients.
So with all the similarities to Scorsese’s semi-recent foray into horror, and Stonehearst Asylum playing what may or may not be an open hand in the poster and trailer (though I'd suspect some twists, hopefully), what does this film have going for it? It has an all-star cast and a director back in his element. Along with Sturgess and Kingsley, the movie also stars Michael Caine, Kate Beckinsale, Brendan Gleeson, David Thewlis, and Jason Flemyng, and it was directed by Brad Anderson, the man behind films like The Machinist and Session 9. Anderson can pull off dark atmospheric thrillers in his sleep. I don’t know if this film aims to get under your skin like his previous movies did, but if there’s even a small chance of it, this should we worth checking out.
The film will be released in select theaters and on VOD starting on October 24th, 2014.
