STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Director Likely to Helm FURIOUS 8
Universal Pictures’ hunt for a director to helm Furious 8 continues, and three new names have surfaced who are up for the job. We previously heard that Vin Diesel wanted Rob Cohen to direct the movie. Cohen was the guy who directed the very first film in the franchise. I’ve also seen reports that Diesel could have ended up taking on the project. That doesn’t look like it’s going to happen, though.
As of right now, there are three directors up for the job and they include F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk), and Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest). All of the choices are decent, but for me, Wingard stands out above the rest because this guy has style and vision. If you’ve seen any of his films then you know he’s got what it takes to do something awesome and unique with the Fast and Furious franchise.
According to THR, the three directors will meet with Diesel, who will then eventually sign off on one of them. If he doesn’t feel like any of them are going to work, then the search will continue.
Diesel has already announced that he's met with Gray, and Deadline reports that “the two have agreed to work together on Furious 8. Gray was said to be the studio’s first choice.” That has yet to be confirmed, though. Diesel posted a picture of himself with Gray, but didn’t make an official announcement, so he still might be meeting with Leterrier and Wingard before a decision is made.
