Studio Ghibli Adapts Ancient 12th Century Manga into an Animated Short

The legendary Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli has created a magnificent short film that you've got to see. They beautifully adapt an ancient 12th Century picture scroll. The story is called Choju Jinbutsu Giga, and according to Mashable, it’s considered as being “the earliest records of Japanese manga.” I included a couple images from the original scroll below the video. It’s pretty damn cool seeing it brought to life like this.

The short was commissioned by Japanese energy company Marubeni Shin Denryoku as a commercial, and the purpose was to highlight the ecological issues that the modern world is quick to forget about.

This should tide you over until we see anything from the film project that they’re currently working on called The Red Turtle.
