Sundance Review: Anne Hathaway's COLOSSAL Is a Fantastic and Unique Kaiju Monster Movie

Colossal is the first truly great film that I've seen at Sundance so far. There's already been a trailer for this film that I included for you to watch below, and I liked what I saw in it, but there's so much more to the movie than that!

The trailer makes this film look like a comedy, but even though there are some comedic moments, this film is a heavy drama that deals with some very heavy life issues, and one of the main ones is alcoholism.

That being said, Colossal is one of the most unique and fantastic giant monster movies that I've seen! The movie stars Anne Hathaway as a woman who has lost control of her life due to alcoholism. Her boyfriend ends up kicking her out of his house so she moves back to her hometown. It's there that she reunites with an old friend played by Jason Sudekis who hires her to work at his bar as a waitress.

It's at this point a giant kaiju appears in South Korea and starts destroying things. As the story goes on, we learn that Hathaway's character is actually the kaiju

I won't go into anymore details than that, I'm not going to explain how the whole kaiju thing works, but everything just escalates into complete insanity from there. Some incredibly cool and also heartbreaking things happen, but if I tell you what they are it will definitely spoil the movie. This is one of those special films that just needs to be experienced.

I was not expecting this kind of film when I walked into the theater, but it was a pleasant surprise that was a ton of fun to watch but also heartfelt and emotional. Hathaway and Sudekis both gave phenomenal performances in the movie and they took on fascinating roles that we've never seen them in before. This is definitely a movie worth checking out. It's set to be released on April 7th.
