The Empire Has Their Own R2-Model Droid in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

A new droid has been revealed for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It's an astromech droid which is the same model as R2-D2. This new droid is named C2-B5, and in case you couldn't tell by its all-black appearance, it belongs to the Empire.

This wouldn't be the first black Imperial droid we've seen in the Star Wars universe. There's a droid by the name of R2-Q5 that briefly appeared in Return of the Jedi on the second Death Star. I included an image of that droid below the video in case you're curious.

As for C2-B5, it got a brief introduction in the latest episode of The Star Wars Show. They explain that the Empire relies on these astromech droids to maintain its machinery, "but unlike the Rebel Alliance, Imperial technicians do not grant their droids independence and subject them to frequent memory wipes to keep them subservient."

They don't say how C2-B5 fits into the story, all they say is that we'll have to wait for the movie to find out. I have a feeling that this little droid will play an important part in the story. I will speculate, though, that the droid will have something to do with carrying plans to the Death Star.

The other R2-Q5 droid (pictured below the video) from the original trilogy was apparently charged with storing the Emperor's plans against the Rebel Alliance within its memory bank. So it's not hard to think that another droid would be carrying around certain plans to the Death Star.

Do you have any ideas of the role it could play in the story?

This week, The Star Wars Show (featuring Holo Andi!) exclusively reveals a BRAND NEW droid from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Rayne Roberts of the Lucasfilm Story Group discusses The Force Awakens and Rogue One, we look at the Star Wars Rebels: Complete Season Two Blu-ray and DVD release, and much more!
