THE LAST SAMURAI Team Working With Tom Cruise on JACK REACHER 2
Once Tom Cruise finds good collaborators, he tends to work with them over and over again. Chris McQuarrie is a fine example: he wrote Valkyrie, Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow, and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. McQuarrie was supposed to direct a sequel to Jack Reacher, but he's apparently stepped down, so Cruise is finding other previous collaborators to take his place. Deadline reports that Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are in negotiations to rewrite the screenplay for Jack Reacher 2, and Zwick is in talks to direct. (Zwick directed Cruise in The Last Samurai, which Zwick and Herskovitz wrote alongside Bond screenwriter John Logan.)
The sequel is based on Lee Child's book Never Go Back, which follow Reacher as he "heads back to his old military based in Virginia to take a woman to dinner who is now the commanding officer. By the time he gets there, she has been arrested and Reacher finds himself being charged with pummeling one guy, and fathering a child with a woman. He can’t remember either transgression, but gets to the bottom of it with cunning and sometimes brute force." McQuarrie, who wrote and directed the original, will slide into an executive producer capacity here, but there's no word yet regarding a timetable for production, so Cruise may end up taking on another project first if one presents itself.
What did you think of the first Jack Reacher? Think it warrants a sequel? Excited to see Cruise reunite with The Last Samurai team?
