THE PUNISHER Series Reportedly in Development at Marvel and Netflix
We've already heard rumors that Netflix and Marvel were considering a standalone series based on The Punisher. It looks like they might be moving forward with those plans! TV Line is reporting that it is now in development at Marvel.
Fans will get their first official look Jon Bernthal's version of the character in Daredevil's season two, which is set to premiere on Friday, March 18th. Apparently, the powers at be were so impressed by what Bernthal brought to the character that they wanted to pursue a solo series. In a recent interview with EW, producer Doug Petrie said:
“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people to second-guess themselves. Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t.”
Marvel TV Executive Vice President Jeph Loeb added in a seperate interview:
"Jon Bernthal has succeeded in his quest [to not screw up the character]. His Punisher is extraordinarily memorable, in every way."
I always thought that it was inevitable that the Punisher would get his own series. It was only a matter of time, and it doesn't look like Marvel and Netflix wanted to wait very long. This would make Netflix's sixth Marvel series after the already announced Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.
Marvel has yet to confirm the news, but this is something that fans have wanted, and Marvel seems excited about it, so I'm sure that it will eventually happen.
