THE PURGE: ANARCHY Star Frank Grillo Returning For THE PURGE 3

After blasting through the streets of Los Angeles during The Purge: Anarchy, it looks like the unnamed Sergeant* is coming back for more. Variety reports that actor Frank Grillo is in final negotiations to reprise his role in The Purge 3, though nothing is known about the plot of the movie thus far.

The Purge films revolve around the concept that all crime is legal for one night every year, and in Anarchy, Grillo's character went out looking for revenge for his family but ended up saving the lives of a few people who were out of their element and being hunted for sport. I liked the second movie a lot more than the first one (but didn't love either, to be honest), because I thought the larger scope added a lot to the world-building. The first movie featured Ethan Hawke in the lead role but he hasn't shown up again, so The Purge 3 will be the first time so far in this series that a leading man has returned for two movies in a row.

I thought Grillo's performance could have doubled as an audition to play The Punisher, so maybe the third film could feature him teaming up with the revolutionaries who don't approve of The Purge to take down the New Founding Fathers; giving him a sense of purpose seems like a good way to advance his character a little bit.

The Purge 3 begins shooting next month and will arrive in theaters on July 1st, 2016.

*I've seen reports that Grillo's character's name is Leo Barnes, but I'm fairly certain he's not referred to by anything other than "Sergeant" in the film.
