Warner Bros. Casts Connie Nielsen as WONDER WOMAN's Mother

Chris Pine recently confirmed that at least some of Warner Bros. upcoming superhero solo film Wonder Woman takes place in World War I, which is just one of the reasons it should feel very different from any superhero movie we've seen thus far. The most obvious reason is that it'll be the first female-led superhero film since the godawful Elektra in 2005, with Fast Five star Gal Gadot taking the lead/title role this time around. Plus, it'll be the first major superhero film directed by a woman, with Monster director Patty Jenkins behind the camera.

While we still aren't 100% certain if Sean Bean and Eva Green have signed on to play the film's villains, we now know that the movie is one cast member stronger: THR reports that WB has hired Danish actress Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, Rushmore) to play Hippolyta, Wonder Woman's mother and queen of the Amazons.

Many suspected that Robin Wright, who has been hired to play a mysterious character, may have taken the role of Hippolyta, but now that we know that isn't the case, the speculation can begin again about which character in the Wonder Woman mythos Wright might be playing.

There have been plenty of rumors and early reports about the movie already, and if you're interested, you can read up on all of those right here. Wonder Woman arrives in theaters on June 23rd, 2017.
