Watch: Early Teaser For STAR WARS VR Experience on Oculus Rift
Virtual reality is about to blow up in a big way. After testing out the Oculus Rift recently, I have to say that I'm very impressed with how far they've come in such little time and I'm excited about the potential for the medium and what it will allow people to do in the realm of storytelling.
Rob McLellan, who directed a short film called ABE that we posted a couple of years ago, sent us this proof of concept teaser video for something called the Star Wars VR Experience, a fan-made experience that will hopefully be available on the Oculus Rift sometime in 2016. McLellan and Craig Stiff created this entire thing in two weeks on their home computers with some help from the folks at HammerheadVR, and it looks pretty damn cool. Lucasfilm is developing its own round of "experiential entertainment" set in the Star Wars universe, but it's cool that fans are creating things like this on their own, and with the presumed popularity of Oculus in the near future, I'm guessing we'll be seeing much more of this kind of thing in the coming years. This particular experience will most likely not be interactive like a video game, but probably more like something where you just sit back and look around exploring whatever angle you choose as the story unfolds around you.
