Will Marvel Develop a SPIDER-GWEN Movie with Sony?

Spider-Gwen has become a huge hit for Marvel because fans love the title character. She was only supposed to appear in Spider-Verse and Edge of Spider-Verse, but Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter seemed to embrace the concept and character so much that he has signed off on a solo series for her, which is awesome! There’s also now talk of a feature film adaptation.

For those of you not familiar with Spider-Gwen, it follows Peter Parker’s girlfriend in a parallel universe where she was bitten by a radioactive spider and not Peter. She ends up becoming Spider-Woman in her own world, where Peter dies as a result.

The news comes from Bleeding Cool who reports:

“I understand from well-connected sources that moving Spider-Gwen into an ongoing series was a decision that came directly from Isaac Perlmutter, CEO of Marvel, the man who saw Marvel Studios start making live action movies, who sold Marvel to Disney, who is Disney’s largest single shareholder, who moved the Star Wars comics license to Marvel – and who is always packing.”

As far as talk of a movie goes, before Marvel and Sony teamed up, Sony was looking to expand their Spider-Man franchise with the development of a Sinister Six film and a female Spider-Man spinoff in 2017. Rumors swirled that the female Spider-Man spinoff would star Black Cat, Silver Sable, or Spider-Woman, but maybe it was Spider-Gwen all along?

With the popularity of Spider-Gwen growing, I wouldn’t be surprised if a movie did happen. Marvel and Sony would be stupid not too as it could be a huge hit. Bleeding Cool cited this e-mail from writer/producer Lisa Joy, who is writing the female Spider-Man spinoff movie, to Sony exec Rachel O’Conner, back in May 2014:

“Also, congrats on a fantastic opening weekend! Jonah and I snuck out for a date night to see the movie and had a blast. RIP Gwen Stacy — gone but never forgotten. Can we bring her back as Spiderwoman? Or can I just be best friends with Emma Stone?”

Which leads many to believe that a Spider-Woman movie has been discussed for some time now and that the script she is writing is for the character. The site goes on to say:

Solicitations for Edge Of Spider-Verse #2 were released in early June 2014… while too small a gap, even for conspiracy theorists, this could have been enough for Isaac Perlmutter to make sure any Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman was capitalised on by Marvel Comics first ahead of Sony.

With Permutter’s seal of approval, we can expect to see big things to happen with Spider-Gwen. Even if the movie isn't that 2017 film, I’m sure it will eventually get made. I love Spider-Gwen, and it would be awesome to see Marvel develop a movie based on the character with Sony Pictures.
