Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill Talk About a New Superman Standalone Movie

We know that Warner Bros. and DC Comics have a whole slate of films set up for the next five years, but one of the things that it not officially on that list yet is a true sequel to Man of Steel. But if Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill have anything to say about it, it's only a matter of time before that gets added to the calendar. In interviews with IGN, they both expressed interest in the idea:

Snyder: "I think if we could get a good script it'd be great to have a standalone Superman movie. I think that would be fun to do."

Cavill: "I do believe it depends upon the success of this movie. If this goes well, then we can start negotiating with Warner Bros. to develop a standalone Superman, but they've got their plans set out for other stuff and Justice Leagues and various other movies, so it's about finding the time really. It's something I'd be very keen to do."

Snyder also said "Part of the reason we haven't announced the stand alone Superman movie at this time was to support some of the events of [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice]," which is obviously a reference to what happens at the very end of the movie. Even though it's obvious that Henry Cavill's place in the lineup is secure for future films, I can see why the studio might have wanted to wait on an official announcement until Justice League comes out and that "situation" is resolved. (Sorry for being vague — I'm trying to avoid spoilers.)

People in the comments section seem to think that I'm anti-DC, but that's simply not true. I love Batman: The Movie, Batman, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (and I even have some affection for Batman Forever, even though it's not very good). I enjoyed V For Vendetta, Watchmen, and Man of Steel. You can even read my review of every Superman movie on Blu-ray that I wrote a few years ago. I wouldn't have sat through all of those movies if I was actively rooting against the studio. I'm not anti-DC, I'm just anti-bad movies. I hope they do end up making a true Man of Steel sequel, and I hope that after the events of BVS, Superman as a character has undergone a drastic changed. Cavill is a great fit for the part, but I think the characterization of Superman has been a big challenge for the filmmakers so far, and I'd love to see them shift back toward a version of the Man of Steel that fans recognize and can embrace as a shining beacon of hope in a dark world.
