Zack Snyder on The Marvel and DC Rivalry and His Reluctance To Make a Solo Batman Film

With Warner Bros. ramping up their DC Extended Universe films, a lot of people expect to see some big rivalry between Marvel and DC. I know the fans have been trying to make it a big thing, but as it turns out Zack and Deborah Snyder don't see it that way. Zack tells Empire Magazine:

"Right from the beginning it is different tonally from where those movies are. You know, DC is an ancient world in a lot of ways."

Deborah adds:

"I can see how people would want to make it this big, intnse rivalry. Listen, they are so great. I loved Guardians of the Galaxy...our films are a bit more serious. They deal with things that are a little darker. Things that place them in our world."

The real rivalry lies in the fans, and what their preference is. I've always been a Marvel guy, and I'll always be a Marvel guy, but there's still room in me to love the DC universe as well. They're both so different, which is a good thing. We don't want DC movies to be the same as Marvel and we don't want Marvel to be the same as DC. The differences between the two properties have always kept things interesting.

The tone of the DC universe all started with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies. Those set them apart from Marvel in a big way, but Zack Snyder seems relieved that he doesn't have to direct the next solo Batman film. When talking about coming in to help develop the Extended Universe, he says:

"If it was a Batman movie it would be a much more difficult proposition because of how good Chris' movies are. We live in gratitude to those movies. Chris set a tone for the DC Universe, and separated us from Marvel in a great way. We are the legacy of those movies."

It seems like he would have been reluctant to make a Batman movie. He doesn't have to worry about it anymore, though: the pressure of the next solo film rests on the shoulders of Ben Affleck.
