Tony Scott Directing TOP GUN 2!?

It was recently reported that Paramount Pictures was going to movie forward with a sequel to the 1980's classic film Top Gun, and today director Tony Scott has revealed that he will come back to direct it.  Here's the report:

What’s Playing caught up with Mr Scott today at the Unstoppable junket in Los Angeles and asked him whether or not he’d yet decided whether or not he wanted to return to the Danger Zone.

His answer? Yes, he has agreed to do it.

He didn't say any more than that. We previously reported that Paramount had "made offers to both producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to follow up their action classic, and has a missile-lock on Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) to update the script, one in which Tom Cruise’s Maverick would play a smaller role."

Apparently Cruise only agreed to do the film after being promised his role would be small. I assume he'll end up being a flight instructor or something like that.

I love the original Top Gun film! It's just such a cool movie, and it was done during a time that CGI wasn't used to create those awesome dog fight action sequences, that was the real shit. I can only imagine the sequel will be 90% CGI, and the studio will probably want to throw an alien invasion in the mix to make things more interesting. But who knows, maybe the sequel will end up being awesome.

It's cool that Tony Scott is coming back on board to direct the film, but his filmmaking style has changed so much since he directed the first movie. It will be interesting to see how this all turns out.

What are your thoughts on Tony Scott coming back to direct Top Gun 2?
