JUDGE DREDD Producers Talk More about the Upcoming Film Reboot
During Comic-Con Karl Urban confirmed his involvement with the new Judge Dredd movie reboot, now the films producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich have confirmed pretty much what we already knew about Urban. They did however offer some new insight into what they have planned for the new film, and I think fans of the comic are going to be happy with what they had to say.
The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real.
I love the idea of a hard 'R' Judge Dredd! Taking these comic book films to a rated 'R' level is something a lot of studios have been afraid to do because they feel it limits their audience, and the amount of money the movie can bring in. They then go on to talk about Urban's involvement, as well as when and where they will start shooting the film.
There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision.
So what do you think about Urban taking on the role of Judge Dredd, and their plans to adapt the comic into a hard 'R' gritty film?
