Joe Wright interested in directing STANLEY

Joe Wright's newest Hanna is at the top of my list of must-watch films this weekend. Wright has been attached to a number of different projects including, Anna Karenina and a live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

Wright spoke to The Playlist at WonderCon about one project that he's been interested in getting into produciton called Stanley. It's based on Tim Jeal's novel Stanley: The Impossible Life Of Africa’s Greatest Explorer and tells the story "of true life Victorian journalist and explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley. He is said to have coined the phrase “Dr. Livingstone, I presume” but more importantly his extensive, and harrowing, journey down the Congo River." Wright is said to have a deep connection with the project. Here is what he had to say:

“I don’t know, at the moment. I have no idea. It’d be really good…And I’d really like to go to Africa. My father is from Africa, so I’d really like to go and explore where he was from. But I’m not sure. The problem is you never really end up making the films you want to make. A career is what happens when you’re developing other screenplays.”

As you know there has been a slew of films being made from fairy tales lately. Wright goes on to talk about The Little Mermaid and said he doesn’t “get involved in that kind of competitive filmmaking.” He responded by saying that if Saoirse Ronan would be a good fit for the titular character, saying “if we do it soon enough, definitely.”

What are your thoughts on Stanley and Wrights's other projects? Are you excited to see Hanna in theaters?
