Joel Edgerton to play Tom Buchanan in THE GREAT GATSBY
Joel Edgerton has joined Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby in the role of Tom Buchanan. Originally the role was rumored to be going to Ben Affleck, but he had to drop out to focus on directing Argo.
Luhrmann is shooting the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic in 3D. The cast includes, Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, the narrator in the novel. Carey Mulligan will play Gatsby's love, Daisy Buchanan, who is married to the wealthy Tom Buchanan with Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson.
The Great Gatsby is slated to begin filming in August. This is not expected to conflict with Edgerton's recently announced role in Kathryn Bigelow's untitled Black Ops film.
I think Affleck would have been perfect for this part, but Edgerton is a solid choice as well. I am interested to see what Luhrmann has in store for audiences with the 3D aspect of this film.
