A24’s New Trailer for THE INVITE Teases an Awkward, Hilarious, and Unexpected Dinner Party From Olivia Wilde

A24 has released a brand-new trailer for The Invite, the latest film from Olivia Wilde, and it looks like audiences are in for one seriously memorable night.

Following her previous directing efforts Booksmart and Don't Worry Darling, Wilde returns with a comedy-drama that takes a simple dinner party setup and turns it into something much messier, funnier, and far more complicated.

The film first premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned strong reactions from critics and audiences alike, and this latest trailer offers a better look at why people have been talking about it.

The story centers on Joe and Angela, a married couple whose relationship is hanging by a thread. Hoping to shake things up, they invite their mysterious upstairs neighbors over for dinner.

What begins as an ordinary evening quickly evolves into a chain of conversations, confessions, and revelations that send everyone into uncomfortable but fascinating territory.

The official synopsis asks: "Joe and Angela's marriage is on thin ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors for a dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places. Have they reignited the spark or lit the match that burns it all down?"

What makes The Invite especially intriguing is its contained setting. The entire story unfolds inside a single apartment, putting all of the focus on the characters, their relationships, and the escalating tension between them. It’s a setup that relies heavily on strong performances.

The film stars Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde as Joe and Angela, alongside Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz as Hawk and Pína. Judging from the footage, the chemistry between all four actors is what drives the film, shifting effortlessly between comedy, discomfort, vulnerability, and emotional honesty.

While the marketing leans into the laughs, The Invite appears to have more on its mind than simply generating awkward dinner-party comedy.

As the evening unfolds, the story digs into relationships, intimacy, communication, and the complicated realities of long-term partnerships. It’s that blend of humor and genuine emotional exploration that seems to have resonated with Sundance audiences.

The screenplay comes from Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, and the film serves as an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs, also known as Sentimental, from filmmaker Cesc Gay.

The new trailer does an excellent job of teasing the chaos without giving away too much, letting the cast's sharp interactions and escalating discomfort do most of the work.

Between Wilde’s direction and a quartet of talented performers bouncing off each other, this looks like the kind of character-driven comedy that can surprise audiences.

A24 will open The Invite in select theaters on June 26, 2026, before expanding nationwide on July 10.
