ABC Renews THE GOOD DOCTOR For Season 7
ABC has renewed its hit medical drama The Good Doctor for a seventh season. This really doesn’t come as a surprise as the series is a huge hit for the network.
The Good Doctor is a medical drama series that follows the story of Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who is recruited to work at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. The show follows Dr. Murphy as he navigates through the challenges of being a surgical resident while also dealing with the social difficulties that come with his condition.
This is a decent, compelling and emotionally charged show that tackles important social and medical issues, all while delivering interesting storytelling. It’s not for everyone, but if you enjoy watching medical drama you’re probably already watching this one and happy to hear that it’s been picked up for a new season.
There’s also a Good Doctor spinoff series in development titled The Good Lawyer, and it’s looking like that actually might get picked up. The Good Lawyer will center on Joni, a 20-something woman who battles OCD but is a brilliant lawyer. The character was introduced in The Good Doctor earlier this season. Here are the details on that:
“Relatively new to her upscale law firm, Joni, who is funny, eager, self-aware and a bit anxious, is part of Shaun’s (Highmore) legal defense team. Despite breezing through law school and her Bar exam, Joni’s OCD symptoms take a severe toll on her personal and professional life. Living with OCD, Joni has never wanted to be treated differently and is often embarrassed of her symptoms. She is a great lawyer, using her attention to detail, compulsive over-thinking and analytical skills as a superpower, but was forced to threaten to sue the firm (for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act) when they tried to fire her because of her peculiar behaviors. The role is listed as open to all ethnicities and abilities.”
That spinoff is led by Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman, would mark Desperate Housewives‘ alumna Felicity Huffman’s return to TV.
The Season 6 finale of The Good Doctor airs Monday, May 1 on ABC.
