Adam Sandler Says Roseanne Barr Was Originally Supposed to Sing His “The Chanukah Song”
Here’s a wild bit of trivia that Adam Sandler recently dropped in regard to his classic “The Chanukah Song”, which he performed on Saturday Night Live. It turns out that Roseanne Barr was originally supposed to sing the song before Sandler!
During a recent interview, Sandler shared the story of how he ended up performing the song, which he wrote himself on the week that Barr was hosting the NBC late-night show back in 1994. He told Access Hollywood:
“They were talking about Roseanne singing it, and she was nice enough to say ‘no, let Adam do that, that’s his, he wrote it, that’s his song.'
“I’m happy to be a part of Hanukkah. That was a good time of life to be associated with the song and the holiday. Very proud of that.”
I do appreciate that Barr knew that Sandler was the one who was meant to sing this song and that she turned down the opportunity to perform so that he could.
Sandler went on to say that he still sings the song: “I sing it alone, I sing it without the kids, I go into our basement, I rip it out, I do the soft-shoe to it. No, if it comes on the radio, and I hear it, I get excited, that’s still awesome.”
I love that after all these years Sandler still loves the song and is excited about it! Sandler wrote the song after he noticed there was a lack of holiday music dedicated to Hanukkah. This is such a classic!
