Amazon's THE LORD OF THE RINGS Series Adds Maxim Baldry to the Cast in a Lead Role

British actor Maxim Baldry (Years and Years, Doctor Who) is the latest addition to the cast of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series, and he will be taking a lead role in the project.

A couple of months ago when the majority of the cast was announced, Amazon Co-head of TV Vernon Sanders said, “We still have a few key roles to cast,” and Baldry is obviously one of them. There’s no word on who that character is, though.

He joins the previously announced cast of Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.

The highly-anticipated fantasy series is currently shooting, and series showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are leading the charge on the project. When previously talking bout their cast of actors, they said:

“After undertaking an extensive global search, we are delighted finally to reveal the first group of brilliant performers who will take part in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series. These exceptionally talented women and men are more than just our actors: they are the newest members of an ever-expanding creative family that is now working tirelessly to bring Middle-earth to life anew for fans and audiences worldwide.”

This Lord of the Rings series will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s book The Fellowship of the Ring. Amazon has committed to five seasons of the series, and they will spend over a billion dollars bringing the story to life.

The show’s official Twitter account sent out an image of a map teasing the setting along with two messages: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie,” as well as, “Welcome to the Second Age.”

In the Tolkien mythology, the Second Age was the time in which the Rings of Power, including Sauron’s One Ring, came into existence. It was also teased that the film could involve the island of Numenor. The series will be shot in New Zealand, and the studio also announced that they are already moving forward on Season 2.

Game of Thrones alum Bryan Cogman is serving as a consulting producer on the show, and J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) is set to direct multiple episodes.
