ANDOR Creator Tony Gilroy Wants a STAR WARS Horror Movie After ANDOR Season 2
With Andor Season 2 on the way, showrunner Tony Gilroy is pushing for Star Wars to take bigger creative swings with other projects including a horror movie or even a sitcom.
Given the overwhelmingly positive reception to Andor, he believes now is the time for Lucasfilm to embrace fresh storytelling within the galaxy far, far away.
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Gilroy reflected on how Andor carved out its own lane in the Star Wars universe and how its success could pave the way for bold new experiments.
He explained: “I think we’ve made our lane with Andor, and Skeleton Crew was trying to do their own, too. The hope is that you can do anything, and we’re going to open up some canonical things and concepts in Andor that maybe will get people excited to do other things.”
But what exactly does “other things” mean? For Gilroy, it’s about breaking past the traditional Star Wars formula. “I always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie.”
He continued: “I think the first thing I said to Kathy [Kennedy, Lucasfilm president] when she said they wanted to open a line was, ‘Could you do a courtroom drama?’ And why not? We’ve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and it’s up to other people now to find another way to do it.”
I love the idea of a Star Wars horror movie, after all, The Mandalorian has dabbled in horror elements, and The Clone Wars featured some genuinely eerie story arcs. But an all-out horror movie? That would definitley be uncharted territory.
I just hope Disney and Lucasfilm are listening to Gilroy because it would be a real shame with we never saw a Star Wars horror movie get made. There are so many different concepts to play with and explore!
