Andy Serkis Comments on Directing VENOM 2 and Explains That He Has "Very Clear Ideas"

It was recently announced that Andy Serkis (Mowgli) is officially set to direct Venom 2. The hiring of Serkis was met with a lot of mixed reactions from fans. Some fans are excited to see what he does with it, while others think the studio should have picked a better filmmaker.

Well, for the first time since the announcement, Serkis has commented on the film. As you might expect, he’s not saying much as the the film is still very early in the development process. But, he says that he has “very clear ideas” about what he is looking to do with the film.

Here’s what he had to say at the Television Critics Association during the panel for FX’s miniseries A Christmas Carol:

“I’m right at the beginning stages. I’ve got some very clear ideas about the journey I’d like to see visually and how we can take the characters into another dimension.”

Serkis went on to say that actor Tom Hardy is “very involved with the writing” on the project. Kelly Marcell is writing the script for the film and the new story is “very much centered around their take.” He goes on to talk about being collaborative with his creative team, saying:

“What I’ve learned from directing full stop is you’re working with an extraordinarily team of highly talented people and to create an atmosphere where everyone is able to do their work to 150%. As much as anything, directing is about creating an atmosphere of people not being afraid to step forward with their very best work.”

He goes on to talk about wanting to work with Hardy for years, saying:

“I’ve known Tom for many years and always admired him hugely as an actor and producer. We’ve always wanted to work together directly. I’m deeply excited to work with Tom Hardy and to work with all the great actors who are involved in it. It’s a fantastic franchise. I’m really honored to have been asked to direct it and it feels like it’s a very contemporary story. I think it’s going to be hopefully an extraordinary piece of cinema.”

Well, I hope that Serkis and Hardy are able to pull this off and deliver a great Venom sequel that fans will love and enjoy. I hope it turns out better than the first one!
