Angelina Jolie Leads Dark New Thriller SUNNY as Production Kicks Off
Angelina Jolie is stepping into a fierce new role with Sunny, a dark thriller that has officially started production. The film is being directed by Eva Sørhaug, known for her gripping work on Tokyo Vice and Yellowjackets, and it brings Jolie into the world of crime dramas with a character who sounds intense, layered, and right up her alley.
Sunny taps into the energy of classic mafia stories. It centers on a female gangster who is trying to protect her sons and herself from a violent drug kingpin. After a devastating event shakes their world, she has only hours to orchestrate an escape that will change all their lives.
The script comes from William Day Frank, who developed the story with Sørhaug. The project is also being produced by Jolie.
Producer Mark Fasano had a lot to say about what Jolie is bringing to the film, stating: “People are going to be shocked by what she brings with this riveting character.
“This violent world that Eva and Angelina have crafted is grounded in survival and family led by a mother doing anything and everything within her power to protect her two boys.”
Producer Nathan Klingher added: “Angelina has made this role uniquely her own. Strong, character-driven thrillers like this are rare, and the attention to detail that she and Eva have brought to the film is impressive to watch.”
Jolie recently earned a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations for her transformation into Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria. She also has several upcoming projects on the horizon including Alice Winocour’s drama Couture, Marc Forster’s comedy Anxious People, and the spy thriller The Initiative which reunites her with Mr. & Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman.
