ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Director Teases Impact of Kang and "There Are Big Things in Store"
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania looks like it’s going to be a fun Marvel movie. I’ve actually enjoyed the Ant-Man films, and this one is going to take fans on a crazy adventure in the Quantum Realm. It will also see Ant-Man come face to face with Kang The Conqueror.
In the trailer for the film, after Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and his family are sucked into the Quantum Realm, Kang (Jonathan Majors) tells Lang: "I can get you home and give you more time… if you help me." The question is, what help does Kang need from Lang?
Well, according to director Payton Reed, Kang is trapped in the Quantum Realm and he wanted Ant-Man to help him escape. In a recent interview with Empire, Reed when on to share:
"We wanted to explore the Quantum Realm. It's a massive, massive world-building undertaking. It owes in equal part to electron microscope photography, '70s and '80s Heavy Metal magazine stuff, a lot of my favorite science-fiction-book cover artists, and there's a little Mœbius in there. Fantastical realism is the vibe."
As for Kang the Conqueror, this version of the character is "very different" from He Who Remains from Loki. Reed offered a description of this character saying: "He's someone who has dominion over time, and he's a warrior and a strategist.”
He went on to explain what aspect of this next story interests him: “That's interesting to me: to take the tiniest, and in some people's minds weakest, Avenger, and put them up against this absolute force of nature."
The director went on to talk about the profound impact that Kang will have on the MCU: "I think it has a profound impact on the MCU. Jeff Loveness, who wrote [Quantumania], is writing The Kang Dynasty as well, so there's been a lot of discussion about the impact that this appearance of Kang the Conqueror makes. There are big things in store."
Those big things will all come to a head with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty movie.
The movie officially kicks off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in it “Super-Hero partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible.
Kathryn Newton stars in the film as Cassie Lang, and Bill Murray also joins in on the Marvel party.
Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens in theaters February 17th, 2023.
