Anthony Mackie on the Importance of a Black Captain America: "It’s About Being a Good Human Being"
Anthony Mackie, who first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has risen to take on the mantle of one of the franchise's most impactful heroes.
After receiving the shield from Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, Mackie's character officially stepped into the role of Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Now, with Captain America: Brave New World hitting theaters next month, Mackie opens up about what it means to step into the shows of the character as a black man.
For Mackie it’s about showing kids, regardless of race, that goodness is what truly defines a hero. Speaking about his role, Mackie shared:
“I think it’s just as important for Black kids to see a Black Captain America as it is for white kids. Growing up, my favorite hero was green; it wasn’t about race or anything. It was about him being a good guy trying to do the right thing."
He added: “It’s very important for kids of all races to be able to watch and have someone to look up to no matter what they look like, and see that that package comes with a good human being as opposed to what they’ve been perceived as by everyone else.”
In an era where representation in media continues to spark a variety of conversations, Mackie’s perspective is a reminder that heroes are defined by the content of their character.
Mackie’s Captain America embodies the values of courage, integrity, and hope, which should be values that resonate with all audiences.
In the film, Sam Wilson faces his toughest challenge yet. After meeting with U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford in his MCU debut, Sam becomes entangled in an international crisis.
Tasked with uncovering the mastermind behind a global conspiracy, Sam must act before the entire world descends into chaos.
The movie was directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige, the movie will hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
