Apple TV’s MISTBORN Fantasy Film Project Takes Shape as Brandon Sanderson Shares Script Progress
Apple TV is continuing its push into big-scale fantasy, and one of its most exciting projects just hit a meaningful milestone. The long-anticipated adaptation of Mistborn is still in development, but according to its creator, things are finally moving in the right direction.
Brandon Sanderson recently offered a fresh update on the film, confirming that the screenplay is now halfway finished. It’s the kind of progress fans have been waiting to hear after years of stops and starts with the project.
In a YouTube update, Sanderson said, “The screenplay is at 50%. I’m moving right along on that,” making it clear that the script is actively taking shape.
He also explained that while Apple hasn’t reviewed the full draft yet, early discussions have been promising. “good feedback” about what the studio expects has already come his way, giving him a clearer sense of direction.
That momentum seems to be fueling his confidence. As he put it, “I’m feeling really good about how this is going,” which should be reassuring for fans who’ve watched this adaptation struggle to gain traction in the past.
Mistborn kicks off with The Final Empire, introducing a gritty fantasy world ruled by an immortal tyrant. The story centers on a crew of thieves who harness a fascinating magic system called Allomancy, where ingesting and “burning” metals grants different abilities.
It blends heist storytelling with dense world-building, which is a big part of why readers have been hooked on it for years.
Getting Mistborn to the screen hasn’t been easy. Various studios have taken a shot at developing it, but nothing ever fully clicked. At one point in 2023, the adaptation even stalled out completely. Now, with Apple TV backing the film, there’s a stronger sense that the project finally has a steady path forward.
Sanderson’s involvement is also a huge plus. He isn’t just handing over the keys to someone else. After working as a consulting producer on The Wheel of Time, he’s now directly shaping the adaptation of his own work, which should help preserve what makes Mistborn special.
Of course, this is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. Sanderson’s Cosmere universe, which also includes The Stormlight Archive and Elantris, has been eyed for multiple adaptations. The Stormlight Archive in particular is being explored as a TV series, hinting at a future where his interconnected stories could expand across screens.
There’s still a long road ahead before Mistborn actually hits production, but this latest update feels like a genuine step forward. If the script continues to come together and Apple stays committed, this could end up being the fantasy epic fans have been waiting for.
