Ari Aster and Joaquin Phoenix's BEAU IS AFRAID Movie Described as “a Jewish Lord of the Rings” in Promo Video
Director Ari Aster’s next film, Beau Is Afraid, looks like it’s going to take audiences on an insane journey. Aster is the director of the super dark horror film Hereditary and Midsommar, but this new film of his looks like a very different kind of movie.
We’ve got a behind the scenes featurette for you to watch today, and it features the director talking about what he was looking to do with this film and describing it as being “a Jewish Lord of the Rings, but He [Joaquin Phoenix’s character] is just going to his mom’s house.”
He went on to say, “I want to put you in the experience of being a loser,” and that “if you pumped a ten-year-old full of Zoloft and had him get your groceries… that’s like this movie.” So, get ready for a wild time at the movies!
The story follows his character across multiple decades and in the process, it looks like he starts to lose his mind. The synopsis reads: “A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film.”
Phoenix is joined in the film by Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Denis Ménochet, Kylie Rogers, Armen Nahapetian, Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone.
Aster previously described the film as a “nightmare comedy,” and it looks like that’s what it will deliver! Beau Is Afraid will be released in theaters on April 21, 2023.
