As Expected, AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Has a Low Box-Office Opening
There was a part of me that wondered if Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might actually have a decent box office opening. After all, it did open during the holidays and there are slim pickings at the theaters right now. But, no… DC’s Aquaman sequel ended up having the low box office opening that we all expected. It’s one of the worst DCEU debuts ever.
Aquaman has officially closed out the DCEU with a $27.6 million opening weekend, making it one of the brand's worst debuts. Over the four-day holiday weekend, the Aquaman sequel made a disappointing $40 million domestically.
As for the international box office, it opened to $80 million taking its global total to $120 million, which puts the movie in the same ballpark as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, The Flash, and The Marvels.
The first Aquaman movie made over $1.1 billion so the studio initially had high hopes for the sequel when they first started working on it. But, the superhero movie landscape has changed so much between the release of Aquaman and its sequel and the DC movie franchise is now in the middle of an overhaul with James Gunn and Peter Safran leading the charge.
I haven’t had a chance to see Aquaman, but a few of my friends have seen it and they’ve been telling me that it’s not as bad as some of the reviews are making it out to be. I’ll probably end up watching it sometime this week.
