Austin Abrams in Talks to Join Zach Cregger’s Horror-Driven RESIDENT EVIL Movie
Zach Cregger, the filmmaker who gave us the gnarly terror of Barbarian, is setting his sights on Raccoon City, and it looks like Wolfs and Whalefall star Austin Abrams (Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark) is coming along for the ride.
According to Deadline, Abrams is currently in talks to join the cast of Cregger’s Resident Evil movie, which is being produced by Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions. There’s no word on who the actor is playing, but some fans think he’ll be playing Leon Kennedy.
Abrams already has a working relationship with Cregger, having a role in the director’s upcoming project Weapons, so it makes sense that they would want to work together again if they had a good experience together on Weapons.
Cregger’s Resident Evil is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,” with Cregger co-writing the script alongside Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead).
The filmmaker previously said: “I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor.”
The last attempt to capture that old-school Resident Evil horror vibe was 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City from Johannes Roberts. While it aimed to stick closer to the games, it didn’t exactly catch fire with fans or critics.
Before that, we had six Milla Jovovich-led films that leaned hard into stylized action and global spectacle, and they crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office. Then came the 2022 Netflix series, which fizzled out fast, lasting just one season.
Cregger’s version of Resident Evil is not due to hit theaters until September 18, 2026.
