AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Directors Confirm Steve Rogers Has a Central Role in the MCU Epic

The Multiverse is about to get personal.

After months of rumors and lingering questions about Chris Evans’ MCU future, the first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday delivered the moment fans were hoping for. Steve Rogers is back. And according to directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, he’s at the heart of this story.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the Russos made it clear that what we’ve seen so far is only the beginning. The teaser set the stage for something much bigger.

The footage featured Steve riding a motorcycle home, carefully storing away his Captain America suit, and lifting up the baby he shares with Peggy Carter. It strongly suggests that the film will explore what happened after their dance at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Fans have been debating that timeline twist for years, and now it looks like Marvel Studios is ready to deal with the consequences head-on.

Joe Russo hinted that those early glimpses weren’t random moments stitched together for hype.

“Each one of those trailers is narrative information. It’s all part of a larger story. So I would argue that Doomsday has already started for you.”

He also emphasized just how ambitious this film is shaping up to be, saying:

“Look, the movie is very complex. We thought one of the best ways to celebrate what the movie is was to give characters their own space and highlight some moments.”

That complexity might be tied directly to Steve’s decision to stay in the past. There’s been ongoing speculation that Captain America’s timeline jump fractured the Multiverse in ways we haven’t fully understood yet. If that’s true, then his happy ending with Peggy could have ripple effects that echo across realities.

And if the Multiverse is unstable, you can bet Doctor Doom will have something to say about it. There’s also the lingering mystery of Old Man Rogers.

How did he end up on that bench at the end of Endgame? Did he live in an alternate branch timeline, or did he somehow loop back into the main one? These questions have hung over the MCU for years, and Doomsday seems poised to finally answer them.

When talking about why they brought Steve back into the fold for this movie, Anthony Russo, said:

“We have a special affinity with the character. We can’t see this narrative without his central role in it, basically. The special place he holds among the ensemble, he sort of retains that moving forward.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean Steve is the sole lead of the film, but it does confirm he’s a driving force in the story. He’s still the emotional anchor of the Avengers, even in a universe that’s changed dramatically since he last held the shield.

Speaking of shields, there’s another wrinkle. Sam Wilson is currently carrying the Captain America mantle and building his own Avengers team. So where does that leave Steve?

According to a late 2025 leak, Rogers won’t be suiting up as Captain America at all. Instead, he’ll reportedly take on the Nomad identity and head into battle wielding Mjolnir instead of the shield.

If that turns out to be true, it’s going to be a wild visual. Nomad weilding Thor’s hammer sounds like the kind of chaos the Marvel Multiverse deserves.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, and it’s only the first half of the storm. Avengers: Secret Wars is slated to follow on December 17, 2027, promising an even bigger collision of heroes, timelines, and realities.

The road to Doomsday has officially begun. And this time, Steve Rogers isn’t watching from the sidelines.
