AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Gets a Strange New Brazilian Title, and Fans Aren’t Happy
Disney Brazil has stirred up a lot of noise online after revealing a completely different title for Avengers: Doomsday, and fans in the region aren’t thrilled about it.
Instead of a direct translation, the studio opted to rename the film Avengers: Doctor Doom, or Vingadores: Doutor Destino in Portuguese, and the reaction has been mostly negative.
Changing a movie’s title for international markets isn’t unheard of, but it usually happens for practical reasons. Sometimes a word doesn’t translate cleanly, or there’s a naming conflict.
Back in 2012, The Avengers became Avengers Assemble in the UK to avoid confusion with the 1960s TV series. Those cases make sense. This one has fans scratching their heads.
The confusion comes from the fact that “Doomsday” translates just fine in Portuguese, making the decision to shift the focus entirely to Doctor Doom feel unnecessary. In Japan, the title was adjusted too, but the meaning stayed intact. アベンジャーズ/ドゥームズデイ roughly translates to Avengers: Judgement Day, which still captures the looming catastrophe implied by the original name.
Brazilian fans have been vocal about their frustration, with many joking that if this approach makes sense, then Avengers: Infinity War might as well have been called Avengers: Thanos. Others have criticized the change as lazy, arguing that it strips away the larger thematic weight behind the word “Doomsday.”
Recent reports suggest the movie’s story revolves around a literal countdown to “Doomsday,” tied directly to the MCU’s Final Incursion and the potential collapse of the Multiverse. In that context, the title isn’t just dramatic flair. It’s kinda central to the plot.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already shed light on why Doctor Doom is so important to the future of the franchise, saying:
“Even before what had happened to the actor, we had started to realise that Kang wasn’t Thanos. There was only one character that could be that because he was that in the comics for decades and decades, and because of the Fox acquisition, we finally had it, and that’s Doctor Doom.”
Feige went on to explain how long this shift has been in motion. “We had started talking about Doctor Doom even before we officially pivoted from Kang. In fact, I had started talking with Robert [Downey Jr.] about this audacious idea before Ant-Man 3 even came out.”
Avengers: Doomsday boasts a massive cast, with Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Robert Downey Jr. all officially starring. Making their Avengers franchise debuts are Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman.
The lineup expands even further with the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, led by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn.
They’re joined by familiar faces from the X-Men franchise, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, along with Deadpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum.
Chris Evans is also officially confirmed to return as Steve Rogers. The Hollywood trades have reported that Hayley Atwell and Ryan Reynolds will appear as Peggy Carter and Deadpool, respectively.
The Russo Brothers are back in the director’s chair for Avengers: Doomsday, working from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, their longtime collaborator on the Avengers and Captain America films. Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron is also contributing to the script.
No matter what it’s called in different territories, Avengers: Doomsday is going to be a massive movie event. It hits theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
