AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY LEGO Leak Hints at the Dark Avengers and a Shocking Avengers Character Variant

The first wave of merchandise tied to Avengers: Doomsday is starting to make its way online, and while LEGO sets have a habit of mixing movie moments with original toy-friendly action, they also have a reputation for dropping some interesting hints.

With Marvel Studios expected to finally pull back the curtain on the highly anticipated movie during this month's San Diego Comic-Con, these latest leaks are giving fans plenty to speculate about.

We recently got our first look at a Doctor Doom bust, along with a preview of Victor Von Doom's LEGO minifigure, but now descriptions for two additional sets have surfaced, and one of them could be teasing a major surprise for the movie.

The first set is called "Sentinel Battle," and it sounds like it's based on a sequence fans have already caught glimpses of through leaked footage.

The set reportedly includes a massive Sentinel, the head of a defeated Sentinel, Doctor Doom, Thor, Mystique, Mister Fantastic, Nightcrawler, and Magneto. It also features the X-Mansion sign, making it pretty clear this is inspired by the battle involving the X-Men that's already been rumored.

As cool as that sounds, it's the second set that's really grabbing attention. According to the same leaker, another LEGO set is titled "Dark Avengers Quinjet," and it reportedly includes a HYDRA Captain America minifigure.

There's still room for caution here. It's possible something got mixed up in translation and the set is actually meant to be a New Avengers Quinjet featuring U.S. Agent instead. That said, the source behind this leak has built a solid track record with accurate information, so the report can't be dismissed outright.

If the leak is accurate, though, it could point to one of the movie's biggest surprises. Rather than simply introducing another heroic team, Avengers: Doomsday may feature the Dark Avengers, potentially led by a villainous Variant of Steve Rogers who remained loyal to HYDRA instead of becoming Earth's greatest hero.

Rumors about a HYDRA Captain America Variant have floated around before, but they eventually faded after a supposed plot leak dominated online discussion and became the basis for countless social media scoops.

Now, with merchandise seemingly pointing in the same direction, those earlier whispers suddenly feel a lot more interesting.

Of course, LEGO sets don't always line up perfectly with what ends up on screen, so it's worth keeping expectations in check. Still, if Marvel really is planning to introduce the Dark Avengers, revealing them through a toy leak before the first trailer would be a pretty wild way for the secret to get out.

With San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, fans hopefully won't have to wait much longer to find out whether this is just another misleading LEGO surprise or an early glimpse at one of Avengers: Doomsday's biggest twists.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18.
