AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Poster Has Confirmed a Huge Doctor Doom Story Detail
Marvel Studios has released the first official poster for Avengers: Doomsday, and while fans are still picking apart every frame of that awesome new trailer, the new artwork may have revealed one of the movie's biggest Doctor Doom story details.
The poster features Doom standing with his head lowered, holding his iconic mask while facing an elaborate tapestry. It's a striking image, but it also seems to hint at the emotional core driving this version of Victor Von Doom.
In Marvel Comics, Doom's face is horribly scarred after an experiment meant to contact his deceased mother goes catastrophically wrong. Victor blames his college rival Reed Richards for the accident, kicking off one of Marvel's greatest rivalries.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to be taking the character in a different direction. According to reports, this version of Doom is scarred after attempting to stop the Incursions from destroying his world.
During that catastrophe, he loses both his wife and child. Victor reportedly places the blame on Steve Rogers, whose decision to remain in the past with Peggy Carter may have set the Multiverse's collapse into motion.
Looking at the poster, that tapestry certainly seems like it could be a tribute to the family he lost. If that's the case, Marvel is setting up a Doctor Doom who isn't simply chasing power. He's driven by grief, making him a far more layered antagonist, much like Thanos was in Avengers: Infinity War.
With Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Victor Von Doom, there's already plenty of conversation about just how far he'll take the character. Joe Russo recently shared just how invested the actor has become in building Marvel's next great villain, saying:
"He is so immersed in it. He is so dialled in. He’s writing backstory, costume ideas." Russo continued: "We were just on the phone with him this morning before we got here talking about it. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters. He sees a real opportunity here with the character."
Downey has already proven he can deliver award-worthy performances, and if Marvel gives Doom the emotional depth these early teases suggest, this could end up being one of the most fascinating characters the MCU has introduced.
The film's official synopsis reads: "Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
The Russo Brothers are directing both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, bringing the creative team behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame back together for Marvel's biggest event yet.
If this poster really is teasing Doom's tragic motivation, Marvel may be setting the stage for a villain whose emotional journey is every bit as compelling as the heroes trying to stop him. We'll find out when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18.
