Robert Downey Jr.'s Reaction to Becoming Doctor Doom in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is the Best Kind of Confidence
When Marvel Studios revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, it was a huge unnexpected surprise. After all, this is the actor who gave us Tony Stark, the hero who helped build the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sacrificed everything in Avengers: Endgame.
Now we know exactly how Downey reacted when Kevin Feige pitched him the role. Speaking at the Bilibili World 2026 convention in Shanghai, China, Feige shared Downey's immediate reaction to being offered Victor Von Doom.
"His exact words were: 'I played the best hero, I can play the best villain.'"
Sure, fans can debate whether Iron Man is really the greatest hero in the MCU. Personally, I'd put him at the top of the list. But, I also apprieciate Downey's confidence that Doctor Doom can become the MCU's greatest villain.
That's setting the bar incredibly high. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already delivered some great villains. Thanos completely changed the landscape, Loki became an instant fan favorite before his redemption arc, and even Ultron left his mark despite only appearing in one film.
Doctor Doom, though, is on another level in Marvel Comics, and it's wild that the character is only now making his proper MCU debut.
Casting Downey in the role still feels like one of the of most unexpected creative swings Marvel has taken. There's no question he has the acting chops to pull it off. He's always been able to jump effortlessly between humor, heartbreak, charm, and menace. Those qualities should make for a fascinating version of Doom.
We still don’t know how his appeareance will be handled in the film. Will he physically resemble Tony Stark? Will Earth's Mightiest Heroes recognize him as the man who gave everything to save the universe? Or will he be scarred to the point that there will be no recognition?
There’s a psychological angle here that has the potential to make Doom even more unsettling if the other characters do recognize him.
Marvel isn't ignoring that obvious connection. It’s been teased that the resemblance between Stark and Doom will actually be part of the story, something the filmmakers have already confirmed.
Joe Russo said: "No better actor in the world than Robert Downey. I'm not going to give away anything. It will all make sense when you watch the movies." That could mean anything.
Is Doom a Variant? Is there something much stranger happening? Marvel obviously isn't ready to answer those questions, but it's reassuring to know the creative team has a plan instead of simply hoping audiences won't ask why Doom has Tony Stark's face.
The MCU has had its share of ups and downs over the last few years, but Avengers: Doomsday feels like one of those movies that could completely shift the momentum back in Marvel's favor. Between the return of Downey, the arrival of Doctor Doom, and the Russo Brothers steering the ship again, there's a lot riding on this film.
If Downey believes he can deliver the MCU's greatest villain after already giving us its greatest hero, I can't wait to see what he brings to the screen.
December 17 can't get here fast enough.
