AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Reportedly Gives Doctor Doom a Classic Comic Detail Fans Will Love

When Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters, it looks like Doctor Doom will be staying true to his comic book roots… scars and all.

When Marvel Studios revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would be playing Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, it instantly set the fandom ablaze. Many fans worried Marvel was turning Doom into an “evil Tony Stark” variant, erasing his tragic origin and Latverian identity.

Now, though, it seems those fears might be eased. According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, “Doctor Doom WILL have a scared face in Doomsday, at least at the start of it.”

In the source material, Doom’s disfigurement, and his refusal to accept it, is central to who he is. Even after becoming God Emperor Doom during the Secret Wars storyline, his face remained scarred.

It wasn’t until Mister Fantastic rebuilt the Multiverse that Doom’s appearance was finally restored. If the MCU follows a similar trajectory, we might not see a healed Doom until Avengers: Secret Wars.

I have heard that Downey Jr. will not be a Tony Stark variant and that all the characters who knew Tony Stark won’t recognize him as that character. He is Doom.

There’s still the marketing challenge, of course. Will Disney actually keep Downey unrecognizable and behind a metal mask for the entire movie, especially when he’s one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces?

But, the idea that the actor will sport Doom’s signature scars, at least for part of Doomsday, is a great for fans who wanted a more faithful version of the character.

In the Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene, Doom appears to be seeking out Franklin Richards and his immense mutant powers, possibly to heal his face. That setup could connect directly to Avengers: Doomsday, hinting at how Doom might rise to power.

We’ll just have to wait and see how this story plays out. With Downey stepping into the role of one of Marvel’s most complex villains, and the promise of a scarred, comic-accurate Doom, we might be in for something pretty awesome.
