AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Rumor Says the MCU Will Kill Off a Cosmic Being
Marvel may be preparing to bring one of its most ridiculously powerful cosmic beings back into the MCU, only to take him off the board almost immediately.
A new rumor surrounding Avengers: Doomsday claims that Eternity will appear in the upcoming Marvel movie, and apparently his arrival isn't going to end particularly well. According to the report, the cosmic entity will actually be killed during the film. Eternity was initially introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder.
That's a pretty wild development if it turns out to be true, especially considering what Eternity represents within Marvel's cosmic hierarchy and what his death could mean for the MCU's increasingly chaotic multiverse.
The rumor surfaced during a conversation on X after a fan asked whether any cosmic entities would be involved in Avengers: Doomsday. In response, Insider James Mack claimed that Eternity will be featured in the movie, but also said Marvel plans to kill the character during the same film.
For now, this should firmly remain in rumor territory. Marvel Studios hasn't officially announced Eternity as part of Avengers: Doomsday, so there's no confirmation that the character will actually appear, much less meet his end.
Still, it's one hell of an interesting possibility. Eternity isn't some random cosmic character Marvel can toss into the story without raising some major questions. Marvel describes the entity this way:
“Eternity stands as the living embodiment of time, an eternal consciousness encompassing the entire universe, above and beyond mere mortals and their trials and tribulations.”
Eternity answers only to the Living Tribunal, and the full scope of his abilities is supposed to be beyond human comprehension. In other words, we're talking about a character operating on a completely different level than most of the heroes and villains running around the MCU.
So, if Doctor Doom is somehow responsible for Eternity's death, or even connected to it, that could immediately establish just how insanely dangerous Doom has become.
Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel is clearly positioning the villain as a massive threat to its heroes and the multiverse itself. Killing a literal embodiment of the universe would be one pretty effective way of showing audiences that Doom isn't simply another bad guy with an army and a world-ending machine.
It could also push the MCU further into Marvel's cosmic mythology. Introducing entities on Eternity's level opens the door to the larger forces governing existence, including the Living Tribunal and potentially other cosmic beings. If Eternity can actually die, the consequences could ripple far beyond a single universe.
There's also the possibility that Eternity's death could play directly into whatever Doctor Doom is attempting to accomplish with the multiverse. Marvel hasn't revealed the full plot of Avengers: Doomsday, but what has been teased points toward a massive collision involving Doom, the multiverse, and Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Adding Eternity to that equation makes things considerably stranger and potentially much bigger.
The movie is also bringing Chris Evans back into the MCU alongside Downey's Doom, giving fans even more reason to wonder exactly what Marvel has planned. There are still plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the story, and Marvel appears to be holding its biggest cards close for now.
If this Eternity rumor pans out, though, the cosmic being might have one of the shortest and most consequential appearances in the movie. Introducing a character who represents the universe itself and then killing him could send the MCU into some seriously crazy territory.
And really, if you're going to make Doctor Doom the centerpiece of a giant Avengers multiverse event, having cosmic entities start dropping certainly gets the point across.
