AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Rumor Teases a Complicated Sue Storm and Doctor Doom Story
Avengers: Doomsday is a lot of Marvel characters together, but one of the movie’s most interesting relationships may belong to Sue Storm and Doctor Doom.
A new rumor suggests the MCU could lean into the complicated history between the two characters from Marvel Comics, putting Sue in a tough spot when Doom comes after the Avengers.
There are already plenty of messy relationships heading into Avengers: Doomsday. Bucky Barnes is part of the New Avengers team, which could put him at odds with Sam Wilson after everything the two have been through together. Tom Hiddleston is also returning as Loki, opening the door for a potentially emotional reunion with Thor, which has to happen!
Of course, Loki died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The Loki who eventually became the keeper of the multiverse followed a completely different path, so any reunion between the brothers comes with some serious complications.
Then there’s Doctor Doom. Doom’s exact motivations in Avengers: Doomsday are still being kept under wraps, but footage has him accusing the Avengers of living stolen lives. We also know he has history with the Fantastic Four, particularly Sue Storm and Reed Richards.
One trailer includes Sue describing Doom as someone who was once kind and caring, while Reed confronts Doom by asking whether he did “this.” Marvel hasn’t revealed what Reed is referring to, but it’s clear Doom isn’t simply some stranger who shows up and starts causing trouble.
A new rumor suggests Sue’s personal connection to Doom will play a major role in her story. The report claims, “Sue Storm will reportedly be put in a difficult position of trying to sympathize with her friend Doctor Doom while also trying to protect her family.”
It goes on to say, “She’s one of the few characters with a personal relationship with Doom who understands his motives.”
If accurate, that could give Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm one of the more interesting character arcs in Doomsday. Rather than immediately viewing Doom as an enemy who needs to be stopped, Sue may understand why he’s doing what he’s doing, even if she ultimately disagrees with his actions.
That kind of relationship also has roots in Marvel Comics. Sue and Doom have shared a complicated history over the years, and one of their stranger connections involves Sue and Reed’s daughter, Valeria Richards.
In the comics, Doom saved Valeria’s life before she was born and later became her godfather. Valeria developed her own unusual relationship with Doom, adding another layer to the already complicated history between Victor Von Doom and the Richards family.
There’s currently no indication that Valeria will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but Sue finding herself conflicted over Doom would still feel like a fitting extension of those comic book dynamics.
It could also put Sue and Reed on very different emotional paths. Reed appears ready to confront Doom over whatever has happened, while Sue may be more willing to consider the person Doom used to be and whatever motivation is driving him now.
Protecting her family will obviously remain her priority, but understanding Doom could make that job a whole lot harder.
That’s potentially much more interesting than simply having the Fantastic Four join the Avengers for another massive superhero-versus-supervillain battle. If this rumor proves accurate, Sue will have a personal stake in the conflict that forces her to wrestle with her history with Doom while trying to keep her family safe.
It also raises a fun question for Marvel fans. How far can Sue sympathize with Doctor Doom before it starts creating problems with Reed and the other heroes? Avengers: Doomsday may be preparing to find out.
