AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Rumor Teases How Doctor Doom’s Unmasking Will Be Handled
The rumor mill is in overdrive for Avengers: Doomsday, and this latest scoop might finally explain how Marvel plans to deal with the biggest elephant in the room… Robert Downey Jr. playing Victor Von Doom.
The face of Tony Stark is now stepping into the armor of one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains, and fans have been wondering how the movie will handle the inevitable unmasking.
According to Murphy’s Multiverse insider Charles Murphy, Marvel has a clever strategy in place.
Let’s start with the obvious. Downey hasn’t played Iron Man in seven years, but his face is still instantly recognizable. Even if Doom’s visage is severely scarred, there’s no hiding who’s under that mask for the audience, and that creates a fascinating dynamic.
Murphy claims Earth-616’s heroes won’t actually see Doom’s face. The audience will. As he explains, this is meant to give viewers an edge: “allowing them to have some critical information that should create some suspense...[it] sounds like the Russos have used it cleverly.”
That’s a smart way to handle it. The Avengers don’t know who they’re fighting, but we do. That disconnect could create some serious tension.
The film is also rumored to draw a thematic parallel between Tony Stark’s history with Steve Rogers and Doom’s connection to Steve. In the Infinity Saga, Howard Stark played a role in Steve becoming Captain America, and The Winter Soldier murdered Tony’s parents. That emotional weight fueled the conflict in Captain America: Civil War.
Now, Doomsday may echo that dynamic in a darker way.
The current rumor suggests Loki relocates Steve to Doom’s world, possibly Earth-828, which ultimately leads to its destruction in an Incursion. That event allegedly fuels Doom’s hatred for the former Captain America. The setup reportedly gives fans “a sense of familiarity” before everything gets yanked out from under them “hard.”
Murphy also addressed the biggest question of all: Is Doom secretly Tony Stark?
“It sounds as though he is Victor Von Doom from Latveria, not Tony Stark...but there's still Secret Wars left for them to explain it all because no explanation is given in Doomsday.”
So for now, Doom is Doom. A ruler of Latveria. Not a variant of Iron Man. At least on the surface.
Interestingly, Murphy also mentioned that Monica Rambeau and Doctor Strange aren’t currently part of the film, which is surprising considering Monica’s jump to the X-Men Universe at the end of The Marvels and Strange’s ongoing multiversal chaos.
But that’s not the only rumor making the rounds.
A separate leak, which should absolutely be taken with caution, paints an absolutely chaotic opening for the film:
“LEAK I RECEIVED ABOUT DOOMSDAY
“It begins with a confrontation between Tobey Maguire's planet and the X-Men's. Deadpool and Wolverine are sent to destroy that world. Wade has a device capable of destroying a world, built by Beast. Wade activates the device and starts a countdown to the explosion.
“Meanwhile, Spider-Man finds them, and a fierce battle ensues. Wade manages to escape by teleporting away, while Wolverine and Spider-Man are left fighting and are saved at the last second (by the Watcher). The film opens with the destruction of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man world.
“Loki's power is stolen, and it is crucial to the creation of Battleworld. Doom has all his followers in Latveria, in his castle. You'll be surprised by the number of characters and traitors he has. The final battle begins there. When I say they are saved by the Watcher, you'll find out in the final scene of Doomsday.
“Only the two of them remember, or at least what they seem to remember, the past. They are the protagonists of #avengersSecretWars. They will assemble a group of heroes to restore the multiverse and save everyone from the control of the Scarlet Witch and Doom.
“Shang-Chi, Peggy, and her son, Shuri, will join them, along with a few others—about 10 or 12 in total—who remember everything that happened.”
What’s especially interesting is the suggestion that only two characters retain their memories heading into Avengers: Secret Wars, which hits theaters on December 17, 2027. That sets up a major reset scenario where a small group of heroes must rebuild everything from scratch.
For now, though, all eyes are on Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives December 18. If Marvel and the Russo Bros. truly are playing with audience perspective by letting us see Doom’s face while the heroes remain in the dark, that’s a pretty awesome way to twist the knife.
And if Downey’s Doom really is Victor Von Doom from Latveria, not some corrupted Stark variant, that makes this whole situation even more intense.
Now we just have to wait and see how hard they pull that rug.
