AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Trailer Has Fans Worried Marvel Could Repeat THE MANDALORIAN's Most Divisive Decisions
Marvel Studios finally unleashed the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and it's packed with the kind of massive reveals fans have been waiting for.
The footage delivers an epic clash of heroes, teases a multiversal war, and offers our first real look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. But while excitement is running high, one particular detail has sparked an interesting conversation among Marvel fans.
Throughout the trailer, Doctor Doom never removes his mask. In fact, we never even see his face. We only hear Downey's voice, which has led many fans to wonder if Marvel is saving the reveal for the movie or if the mask won't stay on for very long once Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters.
That concern comes from comparisons to The Mandalorian, where Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin gradually removed his helmet far more often than many longtime Star Wars fans expected.
While plenty of viewers were fine with that creative choice, others felt it took away from what made the character so iconic. Some even believed Pascal's star power influenced the decision to show his face more frequently.
Now fans are wondering if Marvel could make the same move with Doctor Doom. In Marvel Comics, Doom almost always keeps his mask on, making it one of the character's defining visual traits.
Even when it does come off, it's typically reserved for major story moments, and his face is famously scarred. With one of Hollywood's biggest stars now playing the villain, some fans worry the MCU may be tempted to put Downey's face front and center instead of staying true to the source material.
The reactions online came fast. @MrSuperJay wrote, “Nah Dr Doom looks legit!! But I already know they gon force him to take his mask off just cause it’s RDJ playing him.”
@DJWarnerStage pointed out, “Doctor Doom is not supposed to take his mask off. Even if he did his face is mangled beyond recognition. So if they actually do doom justice HE WONT.”
@tomwanderer shared a similar concern, saying, “I just have to laugh how they’re setting up Doctor Doom to be this super intense villain when really he’s gonna spend 3/4ths of the movie mask off and just be RDJ quirk chungusing everywhere.”
Whether those fears are justified remains to be seen. The trailer actually plays things smart by keeping Doom hidden, allowing his presence and voice to do all the work.
If Marvel keeps that mystery intact throughout most of the film, it could make the character even more intimidating. On the other hand, if the mask starts coming off throughout the film, fans will probably keep complaining.
At this point, all fans can do is speculate. Doctor Doom's mask has always been more than just armor. It's part of the character's identity. Marvel has the chance to preserve what makes Doom such an unforgettable villain, even with Robert Downey Jr. underneath the metal.
We'll find out if the studio keeps the mask on when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
