AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Trailer Ignites Fan Debate Over Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom Voice and Accent
Marvel Studios finally gave fans their first real taste of Avengers: Doomsday, and while the trailer delivered plenty to get people talking, one detail has completely split the fandom. It's all about Robert Downey Jr. and the way he sounds as Victor von Doom.
Ever since Marvel revealed that Downey Jr. would be trading Iron Man's armor for Doctor Doom's iconic mask, fans have wondered exactly how he'd separate this character from Tony Stark.
Now that the first footage has arrived, we finally have an answer, and judging by the reactions online, not everyone is on the same page.
The trailer opens with Doctor Doom delivering a chilling warning that immediately sets the tone for what's coming: "Something’s coming. Something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision."
Right away, it's clear Downey Jr. has altered both his vocal delivery and overall tone for the role. His voice sounds deeper and more controlled, especially while hidden behind Doom's legendary mask.
Based on what we've heard in the trailer, this appears to be the voice and accent he'll carry throughout the film.
For plenty of Marvel fans, that first impression landed perfectly. X user @spn678 shared their excitement, writing: "I know a lot of people are iffy on RDJ as Doctor Doom but I genuinely believe that he will genuinely knock this role out of the park. It helps that his design is very comic accurate also. His voice makes him sound straight up menacing"
Another fan, @_kraftpunkk, was equally impressed, saying: "RDJ’s Dr. Doom voice sounds amazing. Wouldn’t even know it’s him under the mask."
Of course, not everyone walked away completely convinced. User @B00K0FTRIBE landed somewhere in the middle, offering a more mixed reaction: "RDJ’s Doom voice isn’t as bad as I’d thought it would be but he shouldn’t even be doing it in the first place"
Then there are fans who simply aren't buying what they heard. One viewer didn't hold back at all, posting: "RDJ's voice for Doom is atrocious. I had no expectations and somehow I'm still flabbergasted by how awful it is"
Another user, @drivenbyfilms, had a similarly harsh response: "Can we have a voice actor dubbing him because wtf was that??"
It's probably safe to say this debate isn't ending anytime soon. Doctor Doom is one of Marvel's most beloved villains, and expectations couldn't be higher. Regardless, it makes sense for Doom to have an accent due to his Eastern European roots in Latveria.
Pair that with the fact that Downey Jr. spent more than a decade defining the MCU as Tony Stark, and fans were always going to scrutinize every detail of his transformation into Victor von Doom.
