AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Reportedly Facing Another Delay, Putting Its 2027 Release Date in Question

Marvel Studios may be facing another scheduling headache with Avengers: Secret Wars. The massive MCU event movie is already working toward a December 2027 release, but a new rumor suggests filming could be pushed back again, potentially into next year.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is "thinking of delaying shooting for Secret Wars once more."

Nothing has been officially decided. Still, if the studio moves filming beyond its previously rumored November start date, cameras might not get rolling until sometime in 2027. That would put even more pressure on an already demanding production schedule.

The film's directors, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, certainly have their work cut out for them. The brothers are coming off Avengers: Doomsday, which filmed from April through September 2025, with reshoots only recently wrapping up ahead of its December 18, 2026 theatrical release.

During a recent interview with AP News, the Russos confirmed they had already started “soft prepping” Secret Wars, with Joe acknowledging just how demanding it is to tackle two Avengers movies back to back.

“When you’re doing one of these movies it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done. When you’re doing two of them, it’s almost inconceivable. But it’s the second time around we’re doing two back to back.”

Considering the size of these movies, it's easy to understand why Marvel might want some extra breathing room.

Of course, there's also the possibility that production is further along than anyone realizes. Previous reports have suggested that some Secret Wars scenes may have already been filmed, which could help explain how Marvel intends to meet its release date.

The Russos also have an advantage this time around. With much of the cast and crew coming straight off Doomsday, and plenty of sets potentially ready to reuse, the next Avengers movie may not require the same amount of preparation. That could help production move faster once principal photography gets underway.

Even so, the schedule looks pretty tight. If Secret Wars follows a filming timeline similar to Doomsday, starting in November would leave roughly a year for filming, post-production, and the extensive visual effects work these movies require. A move into 2027 could make the current release date even harder to hit.

Both Avengers movies were already delayed last year, with Doomsday moving to December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars landing on December 17, 2027. Another production delay could put that second date in jeopardy, possibly sending the MCU's next major crossover event into 2028.

For now, Marvel hasn't announced any changes, and Richtman's report remains an unconfirmed rumor.
